Most UFO stories give you one thing: a witness, or a light, or a blurry frame. The Tic Tac gives you a trained fighter pilot, a second pilot in the air alongside him, a warship’s radar that had been logging the same intruders for a week, a gun-camera video the Pentagon later confirmed was real, and a squadron’s worth of sailors who all came home with the same story. That is an unusual amount of corroboration for a case whose central object looked, by the pilots’ own account, like a breath mint.

On 14 November 2004, roughly 100 miles off the coast of southern California, aircrew from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz were vectored onto something their strike group could not identify and, more than twenty years on, still cannot. The encounter is now the founding document of the modern UAP conversation — the case that dragged the subject from late-night radio onto the front page of the New York Times and into congressional hearings. This is what actually happened, what the evidence can bear, and where the retellings have quietly run ahead of the record.

A cruiser, a radar and a week of strange returns

The Tic Tac did not begin with the pilots. It began, days earlier, on a radar screen.

Sailing with the Nimitz was the guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton, whose SPY-1 phased-array radar is one of the more capable air-search systems afloat. From around 10 November, its operators — chief among them Senior Chief Kevin Day, an air-intercept controller with long experience reading that scope — began picking up clusters of objects that behaved like nothing in the inventory. They appeared in groups, loitered at altitudes above 60,000 feet, and on occasion dropped like a stone toward the sea before levelling off.

The crew’s first assumption was the sensible one: the radar was wrong. The Princeton had recently had its combat systems upgraded, and a fresh install throwing phantom tracks is far more common than a fleet of anomalous craft. So they recalibrated, ran the checks, and satisfied themselves the equipment was healthy. The returns stayed. Day took to calling them “AAVs” — anomalous aerial vehicles — and over several days he watched them come and go, always in the same patch of ocean.

That is the part of the case that gets least attention and arguably deserves the most. Before a single pilot laid eyes on anything, a professional radar operator on a warship had spent the better part of a week convinced that real objects were doing impossible things over his strike group — and had done the unglamorous work of ruling out his own kit first.

14 November 2004: the intercept

On the morning of the 14th, with the objects back on the scope, the Princeton decided to put eyes on them. Two F/A-18F Super Hornets already airborne on a training hop were diverted to investigate. In the lead jet was Commander David Fravor, the commanding officer of strike fighter squadron VFA-41, the “Black Aces” — about as senior and unflappable a witness as the Navy can produce. In the second was Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich. Each two-seat jet also carried a weapons systems officer in the back, so four aircrew in total watched what came next.

Arriving over the coordinates, the pilots first noticed something in the water: an oval patch of frothing, churning sea, roughly the size of a Boeing 737, as though something large was breaching or hovering just beneath the surface. And above it, darting around with no obvious relationship to the wind or the waves, was a small white object.

It was, in Fravor’s now-famous description, shaped like a Tic Tac. Perhaps 40 feet long — about the length of his own aircraft — smooth, wingless, with no windows, no exhaust plume, no rotor wash and no visible means of propulsion. It moved abruptly and without the arcs and inertia you expect from anything that flies by pushing air. Dietrich, watching from her high perch, has described the same object with the same flat conviction ever since, while being scrupulous about the limits of what she saw. Both pilots have been at pains to say the honest thing: they don’t know what it was, only that it was there and that it should not have been able to do what it did.

The object that mirrored him

Fravor did what fighter pilots do. He descended in a spiralling arc to get a closer look and, if possible, cut the object off. What he reports next is the heart of the case.

As he dropped, the Tic Tac seemed to become aware of him. It began mirroring his movements — climbing as he climbed, matching his turn across the circle, as though the two were dancing around a common centre. Then Fravor committed, pointing his nose down to intercept it head-on. The object rose briefly to meet him, hesitated, and accelerated away to the west so fast that it simply vanished from sight. He described it, memorably, as the fastest thing he had ever seen.

Here the radar and the eyeball corroborate one another, which is what lifts the Tic Tac above the average pilot yarn. Within a minute or so of the object disappearing from Fravor’s canopy, the Princeton reacquired a contact roughly 60 miles away — at the strike group’s designated “cap point,” a spot the pilots had discussed only over an encrypted radio. Whatever left Fravor’s field of view apparently reappeared on radar dozens of miles away almost immediately. Two different sensor systems — a human being in a cockpit and a phased-array radar on a ship — independently placed the object where the other said it went.

The video Fravor never got

One detail that surprises people: Fravor never captured the Tic Tac on video. His encounter is testimony, not footage.

The famous clip came later the same day. With the object still being tracked, a second aircraft flown by Lieutenant Commander Chad Underwood was sent up specifically to get it on sensor. Using his jet’s ATFLIR targeting pod — an infrared camera built for finding and identifying targets at range — Underwood recorded roughly 76 seconds of an oval thermal blob against a cold sky, the object now universally known as the “FLIR1” or “Tic Tac” video. Near the end of the clip it darts sharply out of frame to the left.

Underwood, to his considerable credit, has never oversold it. He has described the object’s behaviour as unlike anything he’d tracked, but he stops well short of the E-word, and he has been openly sceptical of some of the more baroque claims other people have hung on his footage. That restraint from the man who actually shot the video is worth more than a hundred breathless narrations of it.

It is also worth clearing up a persistent muddle. The Tic Tac case gave the world one video: FLIR1. The other two Navy clips that always get bundled with it — “Gimbal” and “GoFast” — are from a completely different time and place, filmed in 2015 off the US East Coast by aircrew from the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the squadron Lieutenant Ryan Graves has since spoken about publicly. They are their own cases with their own explanations. When someone says “the Tic Tac video,” they mean FLIR1 and only FLIR1.

The number everyone quotes, and the data nobody can check

Now the uncomfortable part, because a case is only as strong as its weakest load-bearing claim.

The single most repeated line about the Tic Tac is that it dropped “from 80,000 feet to sea level in under a second” — a manoeuvre implying accelerations that would liquefy a human crew and that no known aircraft can survive. It is a genuinely staggering figure. It is also the figure the case can least support, because it does not come from a preserved instrument log you or I can inspect. It comes from the recollection of what the radar operators saw on their scopes at the time.

This is the chronic disease of UFO cases, and the Tic Tac has a bad dose of it. Without a measured range to the object, every headline number — its size, its speed, its acceleration — is an inference stacked on an estimate. A phased-array radar can give you a great deal, but a witness’s memory of a fast-moving blip is not the same as a calibrated track you can replay frame by frame. Several Princeton crew, including electronics technician Gary Voorhis, have since claimed that the recorded radar and sensor data was collected onto drives and tapes and carried off the ship by unidentified personnel in the days afterwards — a detail that, if true, is maddening, and that, being unverified, is itself part of the problem. You cannot simultaneously treat “the data was taken” as proof of a cover-up and as a reason the hard numbers can’t be produced.

None of this makes the witnesses liars, and it does not touch what Fravor and Dietrich saw with their own eyes. It means the specific superlatives — the exact feet, the exact seconds — should be worn loosely. This is precisely the gap the Galileo Project’s triangulating cameras were built to close: get two instruments a known distance apart on the same object, and speed and size stop being guesses. It’s a useful yardstick for newer cases too. The swarm reported off the Virginia coast has a far more arresting headline number and nothing like the Tic Tac’s cross-sensor corroboration behind it.

From debrief to the front page

For years, almost none of this was public. The aircrew debriefed, filed their accounts, and — as far as they knew — no formal investigation followed. The story lived in aviation circles and on the internet’s stranger shores.

What changed everything was a programme most Americans had never heard of. From 2007 the Pentagon quietly ran the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP, funded to the tune of around $22 million at the urging of Senator Harry Reid and largely subcontracted to the aerospace entrepreneur Robert Bigelow’s company. On 16 December 2017, the New York Times published “Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’,” an investigation by Helene Cooper, Ralph Blumenthal and Leslie Kean that revealed AATIP’s existence, introduced the former official Luis Elizondo, and — crucially — put the FLIR1 video in front of a mass audience. Fravor went on the record under his own name. The dam broke.

Then, on 27 April 2020, the Department of Defense did something governments almost never do about UFOs: it officially released FLIR1, Gimbal and GoFast and confirmed the footage was genuine, adding that the objects in them remained “unidentified.” That single sentence is the reason the Tic Tac sits in a different category from almost every case that came before it. The Pentagon was not confirming visitors from another star. It was confirming something narrower and, in its way, more useful — that its own aircrew filmed real objects it could not explain, and that the videos were not hoaxes. A year later, in June 2021, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence published its preliminary assessment of 144 military UAP reports and managed to explain exactly one of them. The Tic Tac had, single-handedly, made “UAP” a term the US government uses in daylight.

The sceptic’s read

A case this celebrated attracts serious sceptics, and the most prominent is the writer Mick West, who has done more than anyone to find prosaic readings of the Navy videos. His analyses are worth taking seriously precisely because they are technical rather than dismissive.

West’s strongest work, though, lands on the other two videos. He argues persuasively that Gimbal’s dramatic “rotation” is glare from a distant jet engine turning as the gimbal-mounted camera rolls, and that GoFast’s apparently sea-skimming object is simple parallax — a slow, distant, high-altitude thing that only looks fast because of the geometry. Applied to the actual Tic Tac video, FLIR1, the debunking has less to bite on: the clip mostly shows an ambiguous infrared shape, and the sharp exit at the end can plausibly be the targeting pod losing its track rather than the object teleporting. But FLIR1 was never the strong part of the Nimitz case. The strong part is the human testimony and the radar, and those are much harder to reduce to a lens artefact.

The honest sceptical position, then, is not “it was all a camera glitch.” It is narrower and more awkward: the video shows little on its own, the record-breaking radar figures can’t be independently checked, and human perception under adrenaline is fallible even in fighter pilots. That is a real case to answer. It just isn’t the same as making the encounter go away.

What’s solid, and what the case grew later

Strip the Tic Tac back to its load-bearing walls and a lot survives. Multiple trained military witnesses, corroborating across two Super Hornets. Radar operators who had been tracking the same intruders for days and who ruled out their own equipment first. A cross-sensor moment — the reappearance at the cap point — that is genuinely hard to explain away. And an official acknowledgement that the footage is real and the object unidentified. For a UFO case, that is a remarkable amount of scaffolding.

What deserves more salt is everything the case has accreted in the two decades since. As the Tic Tac became famous, the numbers hardened, the “they took our data” subplot grew in the telling, and every retelling reached a little further past what the primary witnesses actually claimed. This is the natural life cycle of a celebrated case: it does not sit still, it swells. The 2004 core — what Fravor, Dietrich, Underwood and Day described at the time — is far more disciplined than the mythology now wrapped around it. The best service you can do the Tic Tac is to defend that core and let the embroidery go.

It’s the same lesson taught by Britain’s best case. In Rendlesham Forest, a genuinely puzzling three nights witnessed by trained servicemen slowly grew a telepathic binary-code download that surfaced decades later — the memory lovingly maintained rather than preserved. Strong cases attract barnacles. The Tic Tac is no exception, and separating the hull from the barnacles is the whole job.

The UAP Times take

The Tic Tac earns a credibility rating of 2 — Credible on our scale: well-witnessed, cross-corroborated and officially acknowledged, but short of the 1 we reserve for cases with hard sensor data we can actually sit down and inspect. On documentation it is arguably the strongest modern case there is; on decisive, examinable evidence it still has the same hole every UFO case has, which is a measured distance to the object.

Hold two things at once and you have the honest version. First, something real happened off California in November 2004 that four aircrew and a cruiser’s radar crew could not explain, and that the Pentagon itself has since conceded it cannot explain — that is not nothing, and it is not going away. Second, the most thrilling specifics — the exact altitude, the sub-second drop, the shadowy data seizure — rest on memory and assertion rather than on evidence you could hand to a hostile expert. Treat the eyewitness accounts as strong and the record-breaking statistics as provisional, and you’re left with a case that is smaller than the legend and still, by any reasonable standard, extraordinary. Twenty years on, the Tic Tac remains the best modern case precisely because it is the most documented — not because it is the most extreme.
